Dental Emergency in Los Angeles

Dental emergencies do happen, and knowing what to do when one occurs and getting treated by a real doctor/dentist can mean the difference between between addressing your dental emergency and making it worse. There are some things you can do at home before you come in for your emergency appointment. But always call us to make your dental emergency appointment first!

Toothache

First, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash. Use dental floss to remove any lodged food. If your cheek is swollen, apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth or cheek. Never put aspirin or any other painkiller pills against gum near the problem tooth, because they can burn the gum soft tissue. Come in to see your emergency dentist at River Dentistry as soon as possible.

Stuck Object

First, try using dental floss to gently and carefully remove the object. If you can’t get it out, call and come to see your downtown Los Angeles emergency dentist as soon as possible. Never use a pin, a knife, or other sharp objects to try to remove the stuck object. These instruments can cut your gum or scratch your tooth surface, thus only worsening the situation.

Lost Filling

As a temporary measure, brush your teeth and stick a piece of sugar-free chewing gum into the cavity (sugar gum will cause pain) or use an over-the-counter temporary dental cement you can purchase at any supermarket or drug store. For a while, this will help to prevent food from getting into the opened cavity. See your downtown LA emergency dentist as soon as possible.

Lost Crown

If a crown falls off, make an appointment to see your downtown emergency dentist as soon as possible and bring the crown with you. If you can’t come to see us right away and the tooth is causing pain, brush your teeth gently and, if possible, place the crown back over the tooth. If possible, put on the inner surface some over-the-counter dental cement or denture adhesive, to help hold the crown in place. Do not use Super Glue or any other home or industrial adhesives.

Abscess

Abscesses are infections that occur around the root of a tooth or in the space between the teeth and gums. Abscesses are a serious condition that can damage tissue and surrounding teeth, with the infection possibly spreading to other parts of the body if left untreated.

Because of the serious oral health and general health problems that can result from an abscess, call River Dentistry right away if you discover a painful pimple-like swelling on your gum. In the meanwhile, to ease the pain and move pus closer to the surface, try rinsing your mouth with a mild salt water solution (1/2 teaspoon of table salt in 8 ounces of water) several times a day.

In case of any of these dental emergencies, if the pain doesn’t stop soon and you cannot come to see your dental emergency experts at River Dentistry right away, go to a hospital emergency room, where they can prescribe you antibiotics and/or painkillers to take until you can be seen and treated by your emergency dentist.
